Machine Tools

Machine tools are used in toolmaking and mechanical engineering for processing workpieces. In practice, they are mostly joining, cutting, and forming machines. Forming machine tools are used for machining plastics and metals, while cutting and separating machines are also needed for processing wood.

A machine tool generates a relative movement in the area between the workpiece and the tool to give the workpiece a specific shape. This can be a main movement or a feed or infeed movement, the latter enabling continuous machining.

To ensure that cutting and forming machines meet the requirements of high-performance machining tools, they are equipped with uncoated and coated cutting materials such as diamond, carbide, high-speed steel, cermet, boron nitride, or ceramics. Machine tools consist of a frame, foundation, guideways, drives, control system, tool magazine and changer, tool holders, workpiece changers, position measuring systems, supply and disposal systems, safety devices, and machine enclosure.

Machine tools possess characteristics such as traverse speed, tool change time, power, geometric accuracy, static stiffness, dynamic behavior, and thermal behavior, which influence both the efficiency of the machines and the product quality.

In machine tool kinematics, a distinction is made between serial kinematics and parallel kinematics. In serial kinematics, individual feed movements are built upon one another and are always executed sequentially. The principle of parallel kinematics is that all feed drives operate in parallel and simultaneously. This has not yet become standard practice in machine tool design, allowing serial kinematics to remain dominant. Parallel kinematics utilizes lighter guide elements, enabling higher dynamics, while in serial kinematics, loads are distributed evenly across all guide elements.

Machine tools are categorized into several types. Cutting and forming machines include guillotine shears, bending machines, presses, and press brakes. Machine tools such as lathes, drilling machines, milling machines, planers, broaching machines, saws, brushing, filing and scraping machines, grinding machines, lapping machines, and honing machines are primarily used for machining. Machine tools suitable for material removal or separation include electrical discharge machining (EDM), laser processing machines, and waterjet cutting machines. A laser processing machine is a specialized machine tool that processes materials using a laser beam, and its applications encompass several manufacturing processes.
