Steel and Rolling Mills

Plants such as rolling mills, forges, and steelworks place the highest demands on technology and reliability. High temperatures, heavy mechanical loads, and continuous operation require robust and high-performance components. To increase efficiency and reduce operating costs, systems are regularly modernized and optimized. The goal is to extend maintenance intervals and increase availability. Equally crucial is fast and reliable service, enabling immediate response in the event of a malfunction and ensuring safe, uninterrupted operation.

Steel and Rolling Mills

A wide range of hydraulic and pneumatic components are used in steel and rolling mills. As a distributor with years of experience, we can provide you with expert advice in this industry. With us, you gain advantages both in purchasing and in subsequent maintenance and service work. Even in the coke oven, the air dampers and gas valves are hydraulically controlled to ensure an optimal air supply for coking. The same principle is used in the blast furnace to optimize combustion, save fuel, and precisely control furnace temperatures.

Today, steel is largely produced using the Linz-Donauwitz process, in which pure oxygen is blown onto the molten metal. This process places special demands on the pneumatic and hydraulic components used. Firstly, the oxygen must be injected at a controllable pressure, and secondly, the lance must be actively cooled against the enormous heat. A water circuit is typically used for cooling. Due to their design, the hydraulic components employed must be not only robust but also relatively compact.

In steel mills, special ladle-type rotary cylinders are used to move the molten steel. These hydraulic cylinders combine high reliability with excellent safety and power. Furthermore, their design allows them to easily withstand high ambient temperatures.

Pure steel is rarely used today. Instead, it is further processed in secondary metallurgy. This involves, among other things, the use of large-scale vacuum systems. The pneumatic valves, pistons, and control and measuring elements required for this are also exposed to extreme conditions in this area and must deliver reliably high performance throughout their entire service life, even under high temperature fluctuations and in contact with aggressive media.

Cast steel slabs are lifted and transported by hydraulic lifting devices, among other methods. Hydraulic testing machines are used to check the steel quality, testing samples for properties such as load-bearing capacity, elongation behavior, and tensile strength.

Hydraulic components are frequently used in rolling mills. Hydraulic cylinders, due to their high power density and robustness, are particularly well-suited for these demanding tasks. Roll positioning cylinders can reach diameters of over one meter while ensuring control accuracy of just a few hundredths of a millimeter. Thanks to their hydraulic design, the rolling mill achieves both exceptional precision and versatility.

Hydraulic and pneumatic components are also crucial in environmental control systems, such as heating and cooling systems, and in exhaust and fresh air systems. Particular attention is paid to the comprehensive filter systems to protect the environment, employees, and local residents from exhaust fumes, soot, and dust. A range of hydraulic components, such as pumps and valves, are also used for supplying fire-fighting and process water.
